Sheff Wed Faces a 'Significant Problem', States New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - football oversight chief the regulator's chair

The team's ongoing struggles represent a a "major concern" and the independent regulator is seeking powers to examine team situations in comparable cases, the newly appointed chairman the official has stated.

Through a comprehensive talk, the chairman, who was appointed on Monday, voiced concern towards the club's followers.

The chairman convened with four fan organizations representing the South Yorkshire club recently.

The Championship side have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club failing to pay players on time on several different times, including in the autumn.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a major concern for the league and a major challenge for the sport," the chairman stated.

"Wednesday stands as one of the great brands for the English game and recently we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will allow us to have the club and similar situations referred to us if they need to be investigated and addressed."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with prospective buyers.

Failure to pay player wages on time in spring months resulted in restrictions being imposed by the English Football League (EFL) in mid-year, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the subsequent signing windows, although that restriction was lifted in the end of the transfer window.

Authority's Position

Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the Owls followers, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has been part of their lives in multiple situations.

"I completely understand Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for each organization that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the followers."

Inquired if the authority might compel an chairman to relinquish a club if they are deemed unsuitable, Kogan said: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we assemble the facts and know what's going on, we will."

But Kogan stressed that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the authority would rather to work with them.

"The final option we would consider is commence engagement with an particular organization, an particular chairman, without being able to work with that chairman to fix the problems affecting the organization and the proprietor's dealing with," Kogan said.

"In actuality, when you look back over the history of the game, over the past few decades there have been certain proprietors, few in number, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their clubs and ultimately decline to assume obligation for the long-term prospects."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The chairman convened with officials from numerous teams to detail the scope of the oversight body this week and maintained it represented a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if errors are made, if the football community fails, the extraordinary progress that's been made could disappear swiftly," the regulator warned.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the context of the English game is a major achievement - we must maintain momentum.

"There's an enormous amount of money entering the sport and has come into football for the last 20 or 25 years, because there's no guarantee it will persist in entering the game, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to take a really clear view on risk and of course, of the coming seasons."

Premier League Concerns

The Premier League opposed the formation of an authority because of fears of a negative impact on the top-flight's competitiveness, but Kogan said: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an commercial operation of the elite league.

"As someone who appreciates the worry about compromising the division as a high-quality offering of this country. But at the same time, if you engage with division representatives after today's meeting, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, in fact, they have been telling us in private they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

The chairman continues to confront a "full inquiry" by the public appointments commissioner after he revealed he contributed money to the opposition group in 2020.

The chairman donated money to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the select committee approved my appointment," the chairman stated.

"I am no longer involved in any form of political activity."
