The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
