Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
